ENGLISH

If you’ve ever walked through a local market in Sri Lanka during the fruiting season and caught a strong, unusual smell, chances are you’ve just discovered durian – the “King of Fruits.”

Though it originally comes from Southeast Asia, durian is also grown in parts of Sri Lanka, especially in the wet-zone areas like Kandy, Galle, Matara, and Ratnapura.

🌱 Types of Durian in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, there are two popular types of durian:

  • Waraka – This variety has a firm texture, less odor, and a sweet taste.

  • Vala – This one is softer, creamier, and has a stronger smell. Some people love it, others stay far away!

🍈 How to Choose a Good Durian

Selecting the right durian is a skill! Here are a few local tips:

  • Shake it – If you hear the seeds moving inside, the fruit is ripe.

  • Check the stem – A firm and fresh stem, especially if it’s taller than the bottom of the fruit when placed upright, usually means it’s tasty.

  • Peel test – If the fruit is easy to peel but not already opened, that’s a good sign.

  • Avoid fruits that are already cut and exposed — they lose their flavor quickly.

👃 Reduce the Strong Smell

Durian is known for its strong odor, which often stays on your hands after eating. A popular Sri Lankan trick is to rinse your hands with water mixed with a piece of the durian husk. This helps neutralize the smell naturally.

Also, once the flesh is cleaned and the seeds are removed, the smell becomes much lighter, making it more pleasant to eat or use in recipes.

🌰 Don’t Throw Away the Seeds!

Here’s something most visitors don’t know: durian seeds are useful too! In many parts of Sri Lanka, people soak the seeds in water overnight and drink the water in the morning. It’s said to be energizing and even supports male vitality, according to local beliefs.

😋 Final Thoughts

Durian isn’t for everyone — but those who love it, really love it! If you haven’t tried it yet, give it a chance this season. You might prefer the milder Waraka, or go bold with the creamier Vala.

Whichever you choose, you’re tasting a truly unique part of Sri Lanka’s fruit culture.
